Allan Massie

Allan Massie is a Scottish writer who has published nearly 30 books, including a sequence of novels set in ancient Rome. His non-fiction works range from a study of Byron's travels to a celebration of Scottish rugby. He has been a political columnist for The Scotsman, The Sunday Times and The Daily Telegraph and writes a literary column for The Spectator.

Of course Shakespeare had co-writers – he was a practical man of the theatre

Shakespeare knew that plays are collaborative efforts
Shakespeare knew that plays are collaborative efforts
Bernard Shaw once told Somerset Maugham that his plays did better in Germany than in England because German audiences and German critics were more intelligent than English ones. Maugham politely refrained from telling him that they were better received because German theatre directors cut the plays as they thought fit, something which Shaw forbade in England. I remembered this when I read that two Oxford academics have worked out that the Jacobean playwright, Thomas Middleton, may have contributed to a couple of Shakespeare’s plays.
The connection between this discovery and Maugham’s story about Shaw may not be immediately apparent. Nevertheless it is there, and it points up two different attitudes to the theatre. Shakespeare, I surmise, would have been neither astonished nor offended if told that his plays were not being performed exactly as he wrote them, with every line regarded as sacrosanct. This is because, unlike Shaw, he was a man of the working theatre, a craftsman, a maker of plays, often cobbled together from material presented to him – cobbled doubtless with genius, but cobbled nevertheless.
He knew therefore that something which reads well may not work on the stage. He knew that lines and scenes may have to be changed in rehearsal, sometimes because the actor can’t say them right, or because the scene drags. In short he knew that the script is only a beginning and always provisional. How many plays are performed exactly as they are on the first read-through?
Read a Shakespeare play and a Shaw one and there’s one difference that is bound to strike you. Shaw’s text offers detailed description of the characters’ appearance and manner, and usually very exact stage directions. There’s none of such description in a Shakespeare text and stage directions are brief and perfunctory. Shaw has thoroughly imagined how the play should look and what the actors’ movements should be. Shakespeare offers little in the way of such guidance. The script is the basis for a production, nothing more. Movements will be worked out in rehearsal, and, as for the description of what the characters should look like, this was quite unnecessary, because he knew the actors who would play the parts.

The thoughts about Tolstoy: His life and efforts began in his youth, in the form of doubts and reflections concerning himself, in the form of attempts at self restrictions, in the form of those youthful inquiries as to the essence of being which even the best informed, the most confident of the essence’s science where the inquirer’s intelligent are powerless to answer. Even in the years of his tremulous young manhood. Beneath the rainbow film of worldly pleasures, it smouldered within him, never for a moment dying, this live ember of self disgust at his own morally weaknesses and physical as well. As a boy Tolstoy called himself a pupil of Rousseau at fifteen, and this spark of self analysis who hesitant at first flamed to full power that was in the later years of maturity. Like the encyclopaedia with no lesser of understanding of mankind, Tolstoy created an impassioned “Kreutzer Sonata” a new confession of third degree self examination, more merciless, perhaps, than that of Augustine, originator of this rare literary genre. Brief enough in the case of Silvia Plath, when approximately, like we date back the beginning of the transition from dream to the practical comparison of Thomas Paine the man was revolutionary, defender of human rights. Along with is scientific attitude, he possessed a liking for poetry but this he submerged rather than encouraged as leading to the field of imagination. The Kreuzer sonata by Lev Nikolayevvich Tolstoy: July 1887. in the house at Yasnaya, Ppluyana. The children of Tolstoy have arranged a private concert in which his third so played piano and the violin anonymous instructor played violin, of course, one of the song has been played was the Krautzer sonata of Beethoven. Tolstoy whose feverished by its magnificents can’t just bear in his mind that it is just another song, having been cried since the fast movement of this song has been played. One more time in Moscow he had heard this song performed amongst his friends and family, this time he also have heard the story of a man retold by his artist friend whose acquainted with the man on the train. So it was Tolstoy who have thought the man’s story with beethoven’s sonata with heading “The man who murder his wife” By March 1883, he drafted the story by ploted the leading man is a musician but he didn’t finished and kept the draft’s script while penetrated his thought on how cruel it was in the family affair and sex life of those still remain in the society and still the same as always. Since he had found out the point of a fact by which he believed it was righteous assumption, then he took on that thought unto finished. Even that assumption seem to be a piece of shit he certainly stand on his view point as though, it may be the will by God. How does the reign’s enacting begin? Birth is not the beginning of life, nor is death its ending. Here we go Hindu, aggregates of past experience are held by the soul, which, on the death of the body, retire for a period of rest and recuperation. Bound to the wheel of begetting the forces of which it has not yet overcome, it is drawn again into a gateway of birth. Likes with the rules of causation, may be understood as the principle of law. Thus, thoughts and action reacts upon the individual for good or evil according to their nature. That is whether they are used constructively or whether they are energized by the force of love or even hate of thought in one live, the equivalent of all that we are is the results of what we have thought. Pure thought is the equivalent of happiness by comparison to peacefulness in cyclic order, an advent of man reverses by spirit with all sense of separateness while conscious reigns internally upon the immortality. The critique of pure reason….for The German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724804) …..,,her coronation since she has become The empress of St. Petersberge after the scandalous murder, she hired Kant to put his words for her with his royalty “If the nature has put a sympathy in the poor man’s heart for he should die, for he isn’t born to be an emperor by incarnation.” he is usually read as an idealist because his own name for his philosophy was transcendental idealism. However, transcendental idealism is the epistemological doctrine that humans are cognitively constituted in such a way that people may only know things as they appear to them, not as they really are in themselves. People are psychologically equipped to formulate philosophical questions but not to answer them. There are no metaphysical propositions because putative claims about a reality beyond space and time are neither true nor false. So the word idealism in transcendental idealism is best read as antirealism. In so far as a solution to the mind-body problem may be extracted from Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (1781), it entails a repudiation of Cartesian mind-body dualism for misusing the category "substance" out-side space and time, and an implicit endorsement of the construction of the mental-physical distinction out of a prior monism of phenomena. Conclusion The mind-body problem cannot be solved scientifically. The brain is billions of atoms in motion in empty space. No amount of empirical observation and experimental testing will explain how awareness is generated by matter in motion. Although it is obvious that ordinary mental states depend empirically on the brain, their subjective interiority of those same states is scientifically inexplicable. The uniqueness of one's own mind is ultimately explicable only if we are souls. Was this review helpful to you? Yes No 160 of 171 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars If it were easy, you'd read it in grade school March 13, 2004 By Philip Sandifer Format:Paperback Let me start by addressing some misconceptions you'll see as you roam around these reviews. First of all, there are a couple of low reviews that refer to Kant as being "anti-reason," "anti-truth," a socialist, a collectivist, etc. These are written by Objectivists - followers of Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand has about the same relationship to serious philosophy as McDonalds does to good cooking. She hated Kant, but never quite seemed to understand him. No surprise - he's hard. Which is the second point. This is not an easy book at all. That's why it's most often assigned to graduate students. Even undergrads can easily get a philosophy degree without ever touching this book. It's bloody hard. This is because, well, its ideas are radical and difficult, and because Kant is a careful philosopher. It is not, and this is my third point, because Kant is a bad writer. Quite the opposite. He's a great writer. The fact of the matter is, though, that his subject matter is not exactly a page-turner. But, I mean, what do you expect. You're reading academic philosophy. There's a handful of academic books that are both worthwhile and fun to read, and that's just a fact of life. Kant, however, is quite clear - indeed, he does the service of going over his points more than once - a luxury you won't get when you advance to Hegel. Furthermore, believe it or not, there are jokes in Kant. The best of them is a footnote, in which he notes that "Deficiancy in judgment is that which is ordinarily referred to as stupidity, and for such a failing their is no remedy." Unfortunately, it's all too common on Amazon to bash academic books because they're hard, obscure, or poorly written. The fact of the matter is that these books are not for everyone. They're for specialists and scholars, and are written in a language that is appropriately technical to that task. You don't go and bash medical and scientific books for being too hard for you. Give philosophy a break, and recognize this book as what it is - one of the most important contributions to a scholarly field ever. I don’t know exactly when Sitwell wrote “Still Falls the Rain.” If she wrote it later in the war, she would have known about Great Britain’s revenge bombings, the most egregious of which was the devastation of Dresden, an open city filled with refugees and prisoners (including Kurt Vonnegut). Like Faustus, we have difficulty seeing past our own shallow hurts and desires, even though Christ’s love streams in the firmament. The worm of Cain eats at our brains. Yet in spite of our fallible humanity, the final stanza shows us the voice of innocence still trying to get through to remind us of the sacrifices that love is capable of. I acknowledge that love seems rather ineffective, losing out far more than it wins. Nevertheless, we can find it encouraging that love’s voice is never entirely silenced. Love for humankind may not make an appearance in tonight’s debate as it would be regarded as a sign of weakness. I don’t think we’ll hear either candidate expressing moral qualms about the drone attacks and their civilian casualties. Neither will talk about how we continue to crucify Christ, including the Christ within ourselves. But the rest of us should be speaking up. Here’s Sitwell’s poem, with its pounding, hallucinatory rhythm: Still Falls the Rain (The Raids, 1940, Night and Dawn) By Dame Edith Louisa Sitwell Still falls the Rain—
Dark as the world of man, black as our loss—
Blind as the nineteen hundred and forty nails
 Upon the Cross.

 Still falls the Rain
With a sound like the pulse of the heart that is changed to the hammer-beat
In the Potter’s Field, and the sound of the impious feet

 On the Tomb:
 Still falls the Rain

In the Field of Blood where the small hopes breed and the human brain
Nurtures its greed, that worm with the brow of Cain.

 Still falls the Rain
At the feet of the Starved Man hung upon the Cross.
Christ that each day, each night, nails there, have mercy on us—
 On Dives and on Lazarus:
Under the Rain the sore and the gold are as one.

 Still falls the Rain—
Still falls the Blood from the Starved Man’s wounded Side:
He bears in His Heart all wounds,—those of the light that died,
 The last faint spark
In the self-murdered heart, the wounds of the sad uncomprehending dark,
The wounds of the baited bear—
The blind and weeping bear whom the keepers beat
On his helpless flesh… the tears of the hunted hare.

 Still falls the Rain—
Then— O Ile leape up to my God: who pulles me doune—
See, see where Christ’s blood streames in the firmament:
It flows from the Brow we nailed upon the tree

Deep to the dying, to the thirsting heart
That holds the fires of the world,—dark-smirched with pain
 As Caesar’s laurel crown.

Then sounds the voice of One who like the heart of man
Was once a child who among beasts has lain—
“Still do I love, still shed my innocent light, my Blood, for thee.” Ash, ash— You poke and stir. Flesh, bone, there is nothing there— A cake of soap, A wedding ring, A gold filling. Herr God. Herr Lucifer Beware Beware. Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air. As it feeds on "men like air"—predatory psychic dictators but also perhaps men turned to smoke—the red rage that rises out of the ashes only fuels self-combustion, debunking the idea of transcendence or rebirth at the end of the poem. With its ironic echo of the conclusion of Coleridge's "Kubla Kahn"—"Beware, beware, his flashing eyes, his floating hair"—"Lady Lazarus" repudiates Romantic wonder at the power of the artist, replacing the magical "pleasure dome" of his artifice with the detritus to which the Jewish people were reduced. The poem's speech act amounts to a caustic assessment of the aesthetic sellout, the disaster-imposter luminary: "there is nothing there—." That no consensus exists among contemporary historians over whether the Nazis made cakes of soap out of their victims (though they certainly did "manufacture" hair and skin, rings and fillings and bones) drives home the bitter irony that propels the poem, namely that imaginative approaches to the Shoah may distort, rather than safeguard, the dreadful but shredded historical record. Reenactments of the calamity, including her own, are indicted, even as Plath issues a warning that they will take their toll. Salted minows were as far byond comparison with the herring - Clupea harengus, and if you were belived that the snuffs spilter were as bad. Let us deliberately brought you the crickets eater, when, the rest of their life must have been obnoxiously lived there because of the very negative review of their lives. At last, another day after a year in which their dream died in a sliver jungle like nerves, and another break down inscription sound like the overture of darkness. To die, to sleep; To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause.
